Treasurer's Dept. & Property Tax Information

Important Dates & Information Relating to Property Taxes

July 1st:

Summer Tax bills are mailed.  If you do not receive a summer tax bill within the first week of July, please call.

September 14th:

Summer Tax bill payments are due. (if the 14th falls on a weekend, the due date will be the next business day)

December 1st:

Winter Tax bills are mailed.  If you do not receive a winter tax bill within the first week of December, please call.

February 14th:

Winter Tax bill payments are due. (if the 14th falls on a weekend, the due date will be the next business day)

What happens if I do not or cannot pay my property taxes on time?

Please be aware that the tax bill does not have to be paid in one lump sum.  If it is easier, you may make payments.  You can begin making payments once you receive your bill.  Please call if you have any questions.

The tax bill must be paid in full by the due date in order to avoid the interest and penalty outlined below.  However, any payments made before the due date will reduce the balance due and therefore reduce the interest and/or penalty.

Summer Tax bills:  If summer taxes are not paid by the due date, interest will be charged in the amount of 1% per month on the unpaid balance.

Winter Tax bills:    If winter taxes are not paid by February 14th interest will be charged in the amount of 1% per month on the unpaid balance.

In addition, a one time 3% penalty is charged on all taxes not paid by February 14th.

Any taxes that remain unpaid on March 1st are turned over to the Muskegon County Treasurer for collection.

Millage Rates - 2003 thru 2008

Below there is chart posted that will show you how the millage rates have changed over the past 6 years.  The chart has columns for summer millage, winter millage (with and without PRE - Principal Residence Exemption:  formerly called Homestead Exemption) and then the totals for the year.  There is also a "Notes/Comments" column that summarizes the changes for that year.
